Nurseries in Hanley, Fenton and Longton: a guide for Stoke parents

Looking for a nursery in Hanley, Fenton or Longton? How the school run and the commute shape the choice, and where Busy Bugs sits on the map in Shelton.

Nurseries in Hanley, Fenton and Longton: a guide for Stoke parents

Most guides to choosing a nursery talk about rooms, ratios and routines. Useful, but they skip the thing that decides it for a lot of families in Stoke, which is geography.

A nursery that is excellent and twenty minutes the wrong way down the A50 at half past seven in the morning is not, in practice, the right nursery. This guide is about how the map works across Hanley, Fenton, Longton and the surrounding towns, and how to think about location without letting it make the decision on its own.

Nursery near home, or nursery near work?

This is the first question, and it is the one most families get stuck on.

Near home is easier at weekends and in the evening, better if a grandparent does some of the pickups, and much better on the day someone is ill. Near work, or on the way to work, means your child travels with you rather than adding a second journey, and it means you are close by if the nursery calls.

In a city shaped like Stoke, where the six towns each have their own centre and the commute often runs between them rather than into one place, 'on the way' is usually the version that works. The question is less about distance and more about whether the nursery sits on a route you are already driving.

How the towns sit relative to each other

A quick geography refresher, because it genuinely helps. Hanley is the city centre, and it is where a lot of the commuting, shopping and working happens. Shelton sits immediately next to it, between Hanley and the university. Fenton is south east of there, between Stoke and Longton. Longton is further south again. Burslem and Tunstall are north. Newcastle-under-Lyme sits west, over towards the A500.

What that means in practice is that a setting close to Hanley is not far from any of them. The run in from Fenton or Longton is a short one, and if your working day takes you into the centre of the city at all, it is on the way rather than a detour.

Where Busy Bugs is

We are at Bedford House, Havelock Place, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 4PR, in Shelton. That puts us right in the centre of the city and within easy reach of Hanley and the surrounding areas.

We welcome families from right across the city and beyond, including Shelton, Hanley, Fenton, Longton, Burslem, Tunstall and Newcastle-under-Lyme. A good number of our parents choose us because the nursery sits on the commute rather than off it, which is exactly the point above.

To be clear about what that means: we are one nursery in Shelton, not a setting in each town. Families travel in, and for most of them the journey is a short one.

What to look at once the map works

Location gets a nursery onto your shortlist. It should not be what picks the one you choose. Once you have two or three that are realistic to get to, the things worth comparing are the ones that affect your child's actual day:

  • The room your child would be in, and the ratio in that specific room
  • What training the whole staff team has done, not just the lead
  • How the setting spots and supports additional needs, with or without a diagnosis
  • What happens when your child moves room, and when they move on to school
  • Whether you can talk to the person who would be with your child, rather than only to whoever does the tours

We have written in more detail about how to choose a nursery in Stoke-on-Trent, which goes through the visit itself, and about what to ask on SEN-trained staff, which is the question most worth asking and least often asked.

Visiting from outside Shelton

A few practical things if you are coming in from one of the other towns. Come at a time of day that resembles your actual drop-off rather than a quiet mid-morning slot, because that is the journey you will be doing every day. Park where you would really park. If two adults share the run, bring both, because the person doing three mornings a week should see it too.

And do the journey home as well as the journey there. Pickup at the end of the day is a different drive, in different traffic, with a tired child in the back.

Coming to see us

Our opening times are on the site, and the rooms page shows each of the spaces your child could be in, from the baby rooms through to pre-school. If you would like to look round, get in touch and we will find a time that suits.

Whichever town you are coming from, the visit is the part that decides it. The map just tells you which visits are worth making.

Frequently asked questions

Which areas of Stoke-on-Trent does Busy Bugs take children from?

We welcome families from right across the city and beyond, including Shelton, Hanley, Fenton, Longton, Burslem, Tunstall and Newcastle-under-Lyme. We are one nursery, based in Shelton, and families travel in to us.

Where exactly is Busy Bugs Nursery?

Bedford House, Havelock Place, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 4PR, in Shelton. That is right in the centre of the city and within easy reach of Hanley and the surrounding areas.

Should I choose a nursery near home or near work?

Near home is easier at weekends and if a grandparent helps with pickups. Near work, or on the way to work, avoids a second journey and keeps you close by. In Stoke, a setting that sits on a route you already drive is usually the one that works day to day.

When is the best time to visit a nursery?

At a time that resembles your real drop-off rather than a quiet mid-morning slot, so you see the journey and the setting as they will actually be. It is worth doing the pickup run too, because the end of the day is a different drive.
